The Province of Antwerp is part of the flourishing Region Flanders and part of the attractive Scheldeland region alongside the river Scheldt, one of the main rivers in Belgium.
Flanders has no less than 1.056 km of navigable inland waterways: canals as well as tidal rivers. Almost nowhere else in the world there is so much variation available in such a limited area as in Flanders. The bustling city life, the babbling peace of water, the nautical heritage, nature areas, the Medieval city centres and kilometers of towpaths for cycling and walking transforms the whole region into a wonderful recreation and tourist attraction.
The tourism region Scheldeland has chosen ‘Recreating on and alongside the water’ as one of their main strategic goals! www.toerismescheldeland.be
The leisure department of the Provincie of Antwerp is also responsible for 3 attractive recreational domains developed mostly in former excavation pits where water recreation is one of the main attractions.
- The Nekker in Mechelen: https://www.denekker.be
- The Schorre in Boom, home of the dance festival Tomorrowland: https://www.deschorre.be
- Zilvermeer in Mol: https://www.zilvermeer.be
The Province of Antwerp has therefore chosen to be member of the NIWE network, to exchange experience and knowledge and to be inspired by other members into future innovative water recreational projects. https://www.provincieantwerpen.be/vrije-tijd.html
